Cover Moodboard and Drawing Practice

Moodboard and Practice for Major Project

Hello Guys,

I have worked on developing my drawing skills this weekend by practicing human proprotions and anatomy and studying the effects of animation from a book called 'Elemental Magic' by Josef Gilland Forwarded by Michel Gagne.

Josef, G. (2009) Elemental Magic The Classical Art of Hand Drawn Special Effects Animation: Focal Press.

Firstly, I have benefited from this book since I have learned the effects that I drew here from the book itself which is helpful for my manga since I will be drawing powers and fighting effects.  I was surprised by how this book is composed since it was easy to read and easy to follow.  So no time was wasted on trying to figure out how to learn from the book because it was simple.

Moodbaord of Manga Cover Pages:

I have a huge collection of manga in my room and these are all manga comics that I own.  I have read many manga in my life so I managed to create my own style of manga as you can see in the character design post when you scroll down because I used to imitate these cover pages to practice drawing but unfortunately the drawings are at my home country.  This moodboard will help me a lot because it shows how normally manga cover pages are made so I can take these as references and  make my own cover page for my own manga

Human Proportions Study:

Since I lack the practice of human proportions and normally a person can't draw characters unless he or she have knowledge in human proportions; as you can see in the picture above I studied the Human body  which includes the front, back and side view of the human body.  I think that I learned from this since now I know how the body works and this will make it easier for me to draw my characters in the weeks coming whether it's in the manga or the character design process.

My plan- Major Project

My Plan For My Major Project

The reason I did this plan was because I need a guide to assist me make my manga through the 4 or 5 weeks that are left for the final assessment.  If I don't have this plan, I might have a problem of time management since Digital Arts isn't the only subject I am studying.  Moreover, my plan consists of the steps of doing my manga too with dates next to every step to manage my time.

Library Articles/ Journals

Article /Journal Research

Hello guys,

Today I went to the Kimberlin library set in DMU with my Digital Arts class to research for articles and journals related to my pathway. I am interested in both Game Art Design and Animation since they are both my passion so I chose articles for both of them which had 3D and 2D pieces of art.  While reading the articles I got inspired by 3 quotes that where written in the articles that I found.

Journals from the internet:

1.  Okeda.D and Koike.A  (2010) Creative Industrial Journal. Volume 3 Number 3 (pp.261-271): Working conditions of animators: The real face of the Japanese animation industry.  Available at: Link to the Journal

The quote caught my attention here was the very first sentence which is:
''Japan is recognised as the leading country in the global animation industry''.

This quote inspired me as an artist who loves creating character designs especially Anime and Manga style since it shows how 2D animation in Japan is still strong and running unlike other countries that are focusing on only 3D animation while 2D animation is dying.  Unfortunately, this article shows that animators in Japan are treated badly and paid less which is considered illegal.  Moreover, nobody is talking about this problem and the animators are overworking themselves even in the week ends since they love their job but at the end of the day they find it hard to even put food on their home table.

2. Anonymous (2011) Marketing Weekly News.
Multimedia and Graphic Software Companies; Sony Online Entertainment Awards G.I.R.L. Scholarship for Excellence in Game Art Design.  Available at: Link to the Journal

What caught my attention in this articles was the quote Crawford said which was: this opportunity''.

This quote inspired me since this girl got chosen for an internship at one of my favorite companies Sony which makes me inspired to work hard and get better as soon as possible and to follow my dreams and develop my style, skills and techniques as an artist.

YouTube and Website Researching- Major Project

YouTube and Website Researching

Hello guys,
Since I am making my own manga, I will have to use different materials and software including; ink pigment pens with different pigment sizes, Deleter manga paper which has measurements on it to draw the comic panels and Photoshop to adjust and play with the effects of the pages to make them look better.  I have researched artists using AutoDesk Sketchbook, Photoshop and traditional artwork through YouTube.

Researching Websites:

I have researched different software for my project such as: AutoDesk Sketchbook and Photoshop since I might use them for my manga process to have a finished piece.  I can use AutoDesk Sketchbook for inking my characters by scanning my manga page and do all the inking digitally while I can use Photoshop for upgrading the quality of the page by playing with the light and more.

I think I can benefit from inking using a software instead of traditional inking because if I make mistakes digitally it can be fixed by pressing simply 2 buttons (Ctrl+Z) while if I mess up traditionally I will have to restart everything again.

YouTube Researching:

Here I have looked at an artist using Sketchbook Pro (AutoDesk Sketchbook is the free version of Sketchbook Pro since I cannot afford Sketchbook Pro for the moment).  This artist made me inspired to actually try this software since it seemed simpler to use than Photoshop because it has a simpler UI.

After that, I have researched a Photoshop artist to see how they use the brushwork and sketching using a graphic tablet such as: Wacom.  I think that Photoshop is quite hard for people who are still beginners in the digital art industry since there is so much to do in it.

Then, I have looked at this manga artist's recommendation, usage and tutorial of the deleter manga paper.  I think that this paper is really useful for me since it will help me out with the the size of my manga page and panels since it already has measurements on it.

Here I have researched this artist since he drew everything traditionally using pencil, ink pigment pens and colours.  Drawing traditionally using this type of media is my comfortable zone since I have been doing this type of art style for 2 years.

Ordering my Deleter Manga paper from Amazon:

Yesterday which was Sunday, I have ordered deleter manga paper from 'Amazon.co.uk' and I am expecting to get them today at 4 pm since I have been tracking the product using the Amazon tracking page.

Website Artist Inspiration

Inspiration from an artist's website

The Artist that I got inspired from by making the website is the artist that I talked about in my introduction which is Kekai Kotaki.  The reason I chose Kekai Kotaki is because he has a similar layout to my website.

Firstly, here is the homepage of his website.  Moreover, his website is inspirational to me since he used some of the menu bars in the task bar like me that includes the Gallery and the About me tabs.  The second picture shows my website so that you can compare between them.

the red box has the About me tab inside of it.  You can also see that I have the same layout and tab as Kekai's website.

Lastly, What is shown in the red sqaure box is the Gallery tab.  The second picture shows how the tabs are similar to Kekai's website.

Progress of My Website

My Website Steps

Hello,

I have started my website using a website called Wix which is a program to make your own website without using any codes nd programming which is really useful for artists since we can do websites without coding!  Today I am going to show you the steps of how I made my own Website:

Choosing the Template:

First, I chose the template of my choice.  I chose the template
(The Artist) which you can find in the Portfolio and CV templates.

Making the Home page:

I started by simply changing the background of my choice by clicking the icon that has a red sqaure on it.

Then, I added a text and changed its colors (Road to Animation and Animation Student to show who I am and what I am interested in).

After that, I changed the line design by clicking on the line design that was available and edited it to a line of my choice.

Then, I changed my Video pattern, background and header of the Road to Animation to a darker tone by just simply clicking on the background and header and choosing the background of my choice.

Here I changed the logo design to the alphabets of my name and surname since its my website. Moreover I changed the color of the logo and edited the text by simply clicking in the text and editing it as seen above in the 1st photo.  After that, I added an animation into the logo by clicking on the 'add animation ' which is shown in the 2nd picture.

Then, I started to add the social links of my Instagram, Google+ and Blogger by just clicking on the add social links button which is the red square in the 2nd picture and adding the icons and links to them.  After that, I have added animation to the icons just like my logo in the above steps.

Then, I pressed on the menu bar to customize it and delete the landscape section and changed the name of the creature tab to gallery.  You can change and edit the bar by clicking the pages button which has the red square around it in the picture above.

About Tab:

Following the steps, I navigated to the about tab using the pages button that I mentioned in the step before and pressed on the about tab.  Moreover, I started wrote information about me.

Later, I changed the color of the paragraph that I wrote introducing myself and then I changed the background picture and made it clear by doing the same steps of background change in the steps above.

After that, I added the photos of my inspiration artists to the about tab by clicking on the photos that where already there under the description.

After that I navigated to the contact information menu bar below the About task bar.  Then, I changed the text to my location and my e-mail for my clients to contact me.

Here I changed the background of the to a wallpaper of my choice like shown in the steps above and then I changed the main background to a solid color that works with the other colors to make it aesthetically pleasing.

Gallery Tab:

Firstly in this tab, I have changed the background into a solid dark grey color.

After that I added the photos of my work by clicking on the pictures that where already available and changed them to my drawings.

Lastly, I wrote things about my work and what media I use, then I changed the text color.

Sparrow Process

Process of Sparrow

First, we started researching for feathers to study different styles and kinds of feathers.  Then, we chose the feathers that were most suitable for our style.  please find below the mood board for the feathers we chose:

Mood board

 Initial Sketches:

Then, I did the initial sketches of different feather styles.  As you can see, that there was a different logo back then which was 'KJN' which follows our names (Khalid for K, J for Jessica and N for Nathan).

Logo Creation:

We first got our idea of the Sparrow logo from the sparrow bird logo which as you can see has a style of abstract triangles which is a unique concept so we got inspiration from it and used the same style for our Sparrow logo.  We faced many problems creating the logo since it took time more time than the whole advert.  We used Photoshop to make this Advertisement.

After that, we started with the sketching the logo which turned out to be a success since it looked pleasing to the eye with its triangular abstract shapes.  We liked the idea, so we continued our work on this logo.

Then, We outlined the logo with black line work to make it look more professional and clean.

Furthermore, we started filling in the colours with the assistance of an abstract triangular shaped palette.

Then, we finished with the logo but we were not happy with the result since we wanted it to be more vintage.

So.....................

We went on and changed the colours of the logo to light and dark brown with the addition of Sparrow with a classical font which made it more vintage.

After that, we used this background since it is similar to our logo.  This gave the advertisement a more classical look.

Then, we found the most suitable feather to go with the background and the background of the advertisement through research.

At that time, we added the feather to the background and added a line stroke o the tip point of the feather.

To sum up, we added the motto using a classical font ''One fourth the pressure, three time the speed'' and added the logo under the feather.  As you can see, there are 2 types of the advertisement (one with the sparrow on top of the font and one with the sparrow next to the font).
