Creating the Thumbnails of Fireball Express

Creating the Thumbnails

Hello guys,

In the weekend I have also managed to do the thumbnails of my manga.  Thumbnails are basically every manga page that I am going to draw but in a simple way (they are small boxes filled with how the original manga will look including: the panels, where are the characters in every panel and how the story will progress).  Please look below to understand more...

On top you will see all the thumbnails I have done for the 5 pages.  As you can see this is how my manga is going to look but with better quality, character designs and straight accurate panels.

Thumbnail #1 (Page 1)

Thumbnail #2 (Page 2)

Thumbnail #3 (Page 3)

Thumbnail #4 (Page 4)

Thumbnail #5 (Page 5)

I think that I am ready now to actually start my manga itself.  Although the character design and thumb-nailing were fun to do, they were hard to make too because I have only done manga once in my life and I was not happy with the result.  I hope that I can  do a better job in this manga since I really want it to look exciting and valued by the readers.  Please stay in tune for more progress!

Character Designs and Title Of My Manga

Character Designs (Done!!!) Name of My Manga

Hello guys,

I have managed to finish all of my character designs in the weekend including a new title for my manga which is (Fireball Express!!).  My characters consist of:

1) Ryu (Main character) and his pet Chu Chu.

2) Mukkuro (Villain) and his pet Kuro.

Hair: Red

Name: Ryu (Red Dragon)

Blood Type: Type B

Favorite Food: Burgers and steaks

Hobby: Playing the flute

Name: Chuchu

Blood Type: Unknown

Favourite Food: Coal.

Hobby: Ruining's Ryu's life :)

Hair: Black

Name: Makkuro (Pitch black)

Blood Type: Type O

Favorite Food: Takoyaki (Japanese fried octopus)

Hobby: Video Games

Name: Kuro (Black)

Blood Type: Unknown

Favorite Food: Rice

Hobby: Playing video games with Makkuro

In Conclusion, I had so much fun doing these characters and they have a special place in my heart now because I created them and I cannot wait to draw them in my 5 page manga (Fireball Express)! I think that I have gotten better in drawing human proportions and characters because I have never been able to draw the body properly and come up with creative character ideas like this time thanks to drawing practice every day.

(Please do not share these character designs without my permission).

Change of Plans (Software and Materials)ey

Change of Software and Materials

Hey guys,

I have decided to change the software and some of the materials that I am going to change for my manga project (Fireball Express).

First, I have decided to change Paint Tool Sai to Photoshop since I will not ink my character designs anymore and Paint Tool Sai does not edit images or let me add to them text.  So, I have decided to use Photoshop since I can crop the unwanted spaces, add the story writing in the word bubbles and edit the quality of my manga.

Changing some of the tools

Instead of using Sakura and uni pens, I will use the G pen which is a pen nib that professional manga artists use by dipping the pen nib in the ink and drawing the characters.  I will still use the other pens for landscapes and inking panels since it will not be possible to do it with the G pen.  This pen nib is beneficial because it will allow me to ink the characters with different thicknesses using the same nib and it will give the characters richer quality since the ink is darker than the other pigma pens.

The Culture and Industry of Manga

The Culture and Industry of Manga!

Hello guys,

I am going to talk about the industry, Culture and History of manga in Japan for my manga research and for you people to understand and study more about manga since it may be something new to you. You can see in the picture below a place called 'Akihabara' which is a location in Tokyo, Japan where you can find all the merchandise, anime, video-games and manga comics.  To add to that, there are anime cafes and arcade shops everywhere!  It is a dream for every fan to go there since it has everything you need as a GEEK.

The Manga Industry Now

Manga has always been popular in Japan and read by all generations, sexes and ages since it has genres for every body from action and science fiction to romance and true life stories. There is a study in Japan that more paper is printed for publishing manga than producing toilet papers.  Now Manga accounts 3rd of the book market in Japan which translates to around 1 billion dollars of annual sales. The manga industry employs around 40,000 artists, editors, writers publishers and marketing people. Moreover, the companies that are responsible for printing and selling are: Kodansha comics, Yen press, Shueisha, and Group publishing co. Around 2 billion manga are sold every year. Successful Manga are often made into an anime “a T.V animated series” which are very popular internationally and are still developing both in popularity and technologically.  Some Manga are also generated into live action box office movies, video games, toy figures, collection cards and character goods. The Character goods market alone is worth for around 3.5 billion dollars.

Manga Culture In Japan

Manga is considered and is still part of the Japanese culture since 1600’s. Moreover, the Japanese consider it to be the heart of the pop culture in Japan as Manga became popular with millions of fans worldwide. Nowadays manga respects every age because there are different kinds of genres in manga to respect all opinions; for example: shonen manga is aimed for boys especially young teens while seinin manga is aimed for grown men from the age of 18 till 40 where it has mature content and complex stories unlike shonen manga whose main focus is action and comedy.
For you guys to know what are Shouen, Seinin, Shojo, Josei and Kodomo; I researched more about the kinds of manga as you can see below:

Kinds of manga:

1) Shojo:

Aimed towards young female audience. (Drama, Romance, some Comedy)

Manga: A Silent Voice

2) Shonen:
Aimed for young male audience. (Action packed, Comedy, Drama and sports)

Manga: One Punch Man

3) Seinin:

Aimed for men from 18-40. (a alot of gore, blood and mature scenes).

Manga: Vagabond

4) Josei:

Aimed for Woman (Like Shojo but for older woman with a slow paced story line).

Manga: Unknown

5) Kodomo:

Aimed for Young children. (Comedy, some Action)

Manga: Doraemon

As you can see that every single style differs from the other since different mangas are aimed for different audiences.

How do you read manga?

Manga has always been read from right to left in Japan because it is considered part of the culture. Moreover, even the translated English versions of the American and British publishers made the translated manga read from right to left so that we can get the same feeling of the Japanese manga and to keep the original concept and culture.

Manga: Naruto

The Type of Manga and My Target Market

My type of manga is going to be Shonen Manga since it is aimed for boys from the age of 12-17 although, many men still read Shonen Manga although they are older than 17. It is going to be action packed with some comedic scenes although it is only 4 pages with a cover page. As you can see the panels in both the One Punch Manga and the Naruto Manga are square shaped and simple but the Manga artist may change it depending on the scene and what is happening in it.

For Example look at this Naruto page:

The panels on the right side show different characters with different emotions but it is cut in unusual shapes instead of only simple squares.  My target market will of course be boys between the age of 12 and 17 since I am doing my manga shonen style which is aimed for them especially.

Materials and Software

Manga Materials and Software

Hello guys,
Today I will show what kind of materials that I am going to use for my manga and what type of software I might use for inking my characters.  After that, I will show you guys how manga is read so you can read mine when I finish it!

The Software I am Using:

Paint Tool Sai's Logo

You can see the software on my desktop

I got Paint Tool Sai is the name of the program that I am going to use for inking my sketched character designs on paper since I think it is easier than inking traditionally although my manga will be done traditionally then rendered and fixed digitally. I am going to scan my character designs using a scanner then I will open Paint Tool Sai and ink them there.  I am still really new to this program so I am still not experienced enough using it.

Adding to that, the tool that I am going to use to ink my character designs is the Wacom tablet. I am going to draw on the wacom tablet using the Paint tool Sai software.  I managed to find a video that uses both the Wacom tablet and the Paint Tool; what is interesting that in the video she was drawing in manga style which inspired me more to actually draw my characters using these.

Materials for Manga:

Uni Pigment pens

And......

Sakura Pigma pens

What is annoying in using pigma ink pens is that when I finish inking I should erase the pencil lines which are under the ink that I drew on the pencil sketches so when I erase the ink's quality goes down.  Moreover, I will end up inking my characters in the manga page again since the ink lines are not rich enough to the viewer's eyes including myself.

Simple Ruler

Deleter Paper

This will be my first time using Deleter paper so many things could go wrong including drawing panel scenes on the wrong side of the paper, messing up the measurements of the paper and cutting the wrong side of the paper after finishing the page.  To solve this solution, I watched a whole video on how to use this paper and learned how to use it properly which will make me finish my major project less time consuming.

Simple Pencil and Eraser

Copic Markers

I am going to use the Copic Markers to color the cover page of my manga.  Although my pigma pens are water, marker and dust proof they tend to blend sometimes with the Copics which might ruin the drawing.  I will do my best to prevent that from happening.

In conclusion, So these are the materials that I am going use to make my manga since those are what most Manga artists use to draw and make their manga.
