Artist Research- Hayao Miyazaki

Hayao Miyazakai

Hayao Miyazaki is a producer, animator, manga artist, and a film director.  He is known for the popular anime studio called Studio Ghibli.  The reason I chose Miyazaki as my artist research is because he made and animated my dear childhood movies from 'Spirited Away' to 'My neighbour Totoro' which are the most popular and successful movies he created worldwide.

These 2 photos are scenes from the movies, where the left photo is a scene from 'Spirited Away' while the other one is from 'My Neighbour Totoro'.  As you can see, the character designs of the Studio Ghibli movies are drawn in a simple way with thin line work while if you look at the background of the movie scenes; they have a large number of details and they are drawn beautifully and in a more complex way.

Anime movies tend to have better and more detailed animation and environment art than anime series since anime series take more time and more episodes which will lead to more budget, time and details.

One of the most powerful sides of his work is his complex and detailed backgrounds.  what I like about them is that they are eye-catching and fascinating.  Moreover, the use of vibrant and bright colours contributes to creating a delightful atmosphere.

The first picture shows one of Miyazaki's character designs in detail since there are different poses,  views and expressions of the girl.  As you can see that the girl is drawn in thin lines since 'Spirited Away' is an Anime movie and anime characters usually have simple character designs.

The second picture shows a sequence of a boy running. One of the reasons I chose Miyazaki as an inspiration is because he is an animator and animation shows a sequence of a character moving.  The movement looks natural and unlike many other anime artists, Miyazaki's character deigns are more anatomically correct.  I can relate to this sequence since I have done a project about the movement of a pool ball.  In addition, I have worked with my course mates in a group of 3 by taking sequential images of the swan with different positions.

The Hidden message in the 'Spirited Away' movie by Miyazaki

The Japanese letter where the circle is at is the letter ゆ 'me' which means hot water.  Moreover, this shows that this is a bath house.  Research from the article shows during the Edo period in Japan a bath house was a place were men went to meet loose women and exchange sexual things.  The women were known as 'Yuna' which are hot water women.

Yubaba is the evil witch in the movie, so when Chihiro came to the bath house, her name was changed to Sen since prostitutes change their name and sign an identity change contract for their madam.

No face is a character in the movie too, it is shown that no face was offering chihiro money which shows that it wanted to buy her.  This is based on Miyazaki's thoughts since he admitted that this hidden message is true in one of the interviews he attended.

Please note that Miyazaki is my inspiration for both my sequences and my major project.
